Coastal British Columbia Wildlife

As the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world, the Great Bear Rainforest is home to hundreds of species of animals that make up one of the most bio-diverse areas on the planet.

Spirit Bear

Many of the Kitasoo Xai'xais people believe that the Spirit Bear holds super natural powers, hence the name Spirit Bear - a name that suits it's mythical like presence.

On average 50% of our guests have the privilege of encountering one of these rare creatures.

Grizzly Bear

Much of the Kitasoo Xai'xais territory has been protected, allowing guests to experience these bears in their natural environment.

In the spring we hope to enjoy time with moms and cubs in estuaries and along rocky beaches,  in the fall when the rains fill the rivers our search focuses around the salmon spawning areas.

Black Bear

BC boasts the highest population of Black Bears in the world.

Coastal Black Bears can be seen along the rocky shores searching for shellfish and other inter tidal treats.  Upon the salmon returning to the river systems they too move in to fill up on salmon.

Coastal Wolves

Few of our guests witness this elusive creature though we are lucky enough to encounter signs in the quieter areas of the GBR.

Spotting Coastal Wolves can be difficult though some guests will have the privilege of hearing their calls or experience a brief encounter with them in the wild.

marine mammals

Spot porpoise, Humpbacks, Sea Otters and other incredible marine life as we travel the Great Bear Sea.
These animals are remarkable in their resilience and are a true testament to the health of an eco-system.  We are grateful they frequent the waters in this special area.

Salmon are the keystone species in determining the health and success of the eco-system.  They feed not only the people of this coast but also the plants, bears, wolves, birds and others that make the GBR home.

Understanding how salmon populations are doing is critical to all protection and research.
