Ancient Aboriginal Cultural Sites on the BC’s Beautiful West Coast

The tradtional territory of the Kitasoo/Xai'xais First Nations has been home to Tsimshian coastal people since the end of the last ice age.

During those thousands of years, the indigenous people of the Northwestern coast created a culture that was focused around the bounty of the sea. In the epic landscape of today's Great Bear Rainforest, the various clans habitated island archipelego's and mountain fjords, all depending on the season.

Spirit Bear Adventures is a eco-tourism operation owned and operated by the local indigenous people, whose ancestors plied the waters by dugout canoe, trading with the Haida (Queen Charlotte Islands), Heitsuk (Bella Bella), Haisla (Kitimat) to name a few. Village sites, both winter and summer, marine harvesting areas, middens, and gathering places dot the 5000 sq.km territory and are a testament to the range and organization of these ancient cultures.

There are over one hundred documented ancient culture sites including abondoned native villages, fish traps and culturally modified trees.
These sites are environmental and culturally sensitive and the perservation of them is a priority for the Kitasoo/Xai'xais people, as they are a link to their ancestors and previous way of life, pre-contact. To this end, we at Spirit Bear Adventures wish to share and educate visitors of this history, but in a responsible way.

Our knowledgable, local guides provide cultural site guiding service to these locations that are restricted to non-aboriginals. Arranging a tour with Spirit Bear Adventures to these unique and authentic places will allow guests to learn of an way of life long since past. Our guides highlight areas of cultural significance, tell stories of their ancestors and why they chose these locations, as well ensure all guests respect the sites, taking only pictures and leaving only footprints.
