Klemtu, BC's Big House is a Culturally Authentic, West Coast Traditional Big House

The monumental ‘architecture’ of Klemtu’s traditional First Nations ‘Big House’ is visible for miles as one cruises down British Columbia’s famed Inside Passage heading south from Alaska.


Big house from waterThe Big House Walking Tour is a 3-hour eco-cultural experience that highlights the past and present through interpretive story telling. Our Spirit Bear Adventures staff have a passion for collecting and sharing their people’s stories and weave a narrative that engages visitors of all ages.

The Big House, constructed in 2005, functions both as the community gathering place today but also a window to observe the traditions and hear the stories of the past. Moreover it’s visible for miles as one cruises up the inside passage on the way to Alaska.

Visitors from around the world have toured the Big House and been taken on a historical and cultural journey that ties the traditional ways of life to modern day living in Klemtu and the realities of that to Coastal First Nations People and specifically the Kitasoo/Xai’xais.

On the way to the Big House, guests will visit the local fish hatchery and sample some traditional foods as well as stop at various points of interest. When the tour arrives at the Klemtu Big House, guests will hear the stories of the local native clans and how the poles inside the Big House represent each one of them and tell the stories of how they came to be.
The Big House was constructed in homage to the traditional long houses of the Tsimshian First Nations.

The Big House was constructed in homage to the traditional big houses of the Tshimsian First Nations and is used by the community in celebrations, traditional dances and memorials. This building has allowed the for community to reconnect with their past and bring ancient traditions alive again.

You will not want to miss out on seeing inside one of the most inspiring, aboriginal buildings on British Columbia’s West Coast. Visitors from around the world have stepped through its doors and left with a greater understanding of what the means to the Kitasoo/Xai’xais people. And what the future may hold for a peoples striving for positive and sustainable growth.

All of our Spirit Bear Quest Tour participants will visit the Big House. Other visitors to Klemtu can book the tour for $20 per person tour upon arrival at the Klemtu Tourism Office.
